Central Heating Optimisation
How to Optimise Your Central Heating System
Have you ever noticed that spaces like boiler rooms, attics, and crawl spaces are surprisingly warm? In large buildings, technical areas can become excessively warm due to uninsulated central heating pipes, combi boilers, and boilers, leading to unnecessary heat loss. Properly insulating your central heating system can significantly reduce this heat loss, saving energy, decreasing the workload on your heating equipment, and enhancing its performance and longevity.
Here is everything you can do to optimise your central heating system.
Radiator Foil and central heating pipe insulation
Radiator Foil minimices heat loss and increases the efficiency of radiators. Radiators radiate heat from all sides, including towards the wall. So a lot of heat is lost to the exterior of the house, especially if the wall is poorly insulated. TONZON Radiator Foil can be fitted directly onto the back of the radiator, stopping heat loss to the outside wall. Read more about TONZON Radiator Foil.
In addition, central heating pipes constantly lose heat. Insulating them properly keeps the water warmer and reduces heating demand on the boiler. The best way to insulate heating pipes is with a combination of standard pipe insulation and TONZON HR Lagging Foil. Find out more about insulating central heating pipes.
Optimise your radiators
Optimising radiators goes further than just adding Radiator Foil. Heat flow from radiators located under a windowsill can be improved considerably using Windowsill Foil. Unnecessary heating of the windowsill is reduced, and warm air is better able to enter the room. The next step is the use of radiator fans. These fans blow hot air into the room and warm it even faster, which means that the radiator consumes much less energy to heat the room.
Central heating boiler and combi boiler foil
Combi boilers and boilers are often already insulated, yet their exterior surface can often still reach 30º C. Because they are so much warmer than their environment, they constantly lose heat. Which means more heating is needed to maintain room temperature. TONZON has a simple solution: hang TONZON foil around the boiler to stop heat radiating. The foil can be attached with magnets. So it can easily be removed for maintenance.

Now is the best time to revisit the settings of your central heating. Central heating water settings can save even more energy. In addition, the temperature of the boiler can also be set a little lower, for instance at 60.

For your convenience
Standard radiator foil can be used to insulate normal radiators. De luxe radiator foil is thicker and has undergone more processing, making it a bit more expensive. There are no differences in quality. De luxe foil can be used when the foil remains in view and a more attractive surface is desired. This foil is also used on roller blinds, to reflect the sun's rays to the exterior as short-wave radiation, preventing heat from building up inside.

Yes! If the central heating system has been installed first and insulation measures have only been taken later, most radiators will have overcapacity. Convector ribs can then be ignored and the radiator back can be completely covered with foil. Should the radiator still give off too little heat, the following solution can be applied. Stretch the foil from left to right over the ribs, leaving the vertical channels open-ended. As the top of the radiator is always the warmest, it is advisable to still apply a strip of foil to the remaining part at the top of the radiator. Lagging foil can also be used for this purpose.

TONZON HR Radiator Foil is white on one side and silver on the other. This foil is often used for interior sun protection, but can also be applied to the back of the radiator. The white side then faces inside and the silver side faces the wall. This foil can also be used for radiators that face glass and is also available entirely in silver.

Yes! An underfloor convector can be made more effective by insulating it better on the inside of the underfloor convector, and from the outside, in the crawl space. The outside of the underfloor convector can be insulated in the crawl space using TONZON thermos cushions, in the same way as a bathtub. The inside of the underfloor convector can be lined with TONZON radiator foil. The underfloor convector should only be heating air, not its own surfaces. If you do not want to see the radiator foil from the room, only insulate the areas in the underfloor convector that are invisible from within the room.
