Floor Insulation with Thermos Cushions
A warm floor – and big energy savings
Floors lose most of their heat through radiation towards the colder crawl space floor and foundation walls. TONZON is the only floor insulation system that reduces this heat radiation to virtually zero. TONZON Thermos Cushionsinsulate in a different way, which means they outperform the thickest layers of mineral wool insulation, EPS or Pur foam. The unique TONZON method ensures heats the floor faster. The floor also becomes even warmer than the air above it, and will retain heat for much longer. View the following video on how TONZON makes floors warmer than the air above them. Moreover, TONZON can insulate almost any type of floor - including floors that are already insulated. These become both warmer and more economical to heat when additionally insulated with Thermos Cushions. You'll get the biggest savings by insulating a floor with underfloor heating. However, applying TONZON's central heating optimisation package to a normal floor, will also deliver significant savings.
The benefits of TONZON floor insulation
.
The effects of TONZON floor insulation are best seen on these thermal images. The darker, purple spots are cold. The lighter, yellow spots are warmer. You can see that the temperature of the entire floor has risen by several degrees. The temperature of the floor is the same as that of the furniture, whereas the floor was considerably colder before insulation. Good floor insulation distributes heat evenly across the room - so you can turn down the central heating and still be comfortable. This is strikingly demonstrated by the floor areas under furniture. Before installing TONZON these floor areas were cold spots - almost 5 degrees colder than the room and therefore a breeding ground for mould and dust mites. With TONZON, the floor area in these spots is a lot closer to room temperature, greatly reducing the risk of mould and dust mites.
Two-pronged approach
TONZON's excellent performance comes from our unique approach to insulation. The Thermos Cushions are air chambers made of TONZON foil and mounted under the floor. This prevents the floor from radiating heat into the crawl space. In addition, the air in the resulting air chambers heats up, keeping the heat close to the floor. The result is a floor that heats up faster, gets warmer than before, and stays warm longer.
Many crawl spaces are damp or wet. So a layer of sturdy TONZON Soil Foil is laid on the floor of the crawl space. This works in combination with the Thermos Cushions. Soil Foil stops the evaporation of moisture from the crawl space floor. This means less moisture in the house and optimal performance from the Thermos Cushions. And - piping and suspension brackets will last much longer.
What types of floor can be fitted with the TONZON Floor Insulation system?
TONZON Floor Insulation is suitable for:
- All types of floors: wood, stone, concrete, Kwaaitaal floors, etc.
- Floors that have not yet been insulated
- Floors insulated during construction.
- Floors subsequently insulated with Pur foam or ground insulation.
- Floors with underfloor heating.
TONZON Floor Insulation can also be fitted when there is no crawl space. And floors that are already insulated will produce an even cosier indoor environment when additionally insulated with TONZON.

Why TONZON Floor Insulation?
TONZON Floor Insulation delivers the highest insulation values. Read more about how TONZON's latest product delivers an insulation U-value ≥ 7.0 m²K/W. It also reduces the risk of mould and dust mites - and you save energy at the same time, resulting in a good price/performance ratio. TONZON is indeed the most people-friendly and environment-friendly solution. This is because no toxic chemicals are released during installation, and the insulation material itself produces no unhealthy fibres or dust. Further, very importantly, NIBE research shows that our products have the lowest environmental impact of all insulation materials. That’s why TONZON's unique floor insulation system is the only floor insulation to be awarded the quality mark for sustainable construction.

Frequently asked questions
For your convenience
If you cannot insert your hand into the space between the end joist and the wall, it will be difficult to insulate there. In such cases, leave this space uninsulated, as inserting other materials will just attract moisture. Leaving this space uninsulated has no impact on comfort levels and overall energy savings, as the rest of the floor area is insulated. If you're determined to insulate this space, improvise using TONZON foil adhesive and HR Lagging Foil or HR Radiator Foil.

It certainly makes sense to insulate the floor with TONZON, even if ground insulation is already in place in the crawl space. Ground insulation still allows some of the heat to escape from the floor through the cold foundation walls and via floor ventilation. Insulating the underside of the floor directly eliminates this heat loss.
If there is sufficient height in the crawlspace, ground insulation chips on the crawl space floor can be left in place when installing Thermos Cushions. However, these chips create a high risk of losing tools and make the entire job more difficult. Not every installer wants to work with insulation chips present, so additional costs are often charged.
The supporting beams actually become bone-dry when the floor is insulated. Due to the pressure difference between the crawl space and the interior of the house, air flows from the crawl space into the house. This is an energy-saving ventilation method.

Wood ‘works’ when relative humidity (RH) varies. TONZON Floor insulation makes floors warmer and drier. And as it can become very dry in a house, especially after a cold spell, gaps can open up in a wooden floor. However, this will return to normal in summer.
The RH of the air inside the home depends on the temperature of the outside air, as well as on the degree of ventilation and internal moisture production. A humidity meter can be used to monitor the RH of the air inside. If RH drops below a desired value, reducing ventilation and/or increasing humidity production can keep the RH within the desired range. This can limit the extent to which the wood will 'work'.
Purchasing an RH meter is highly recommended for managing RH levels in the home. Furthermore, skirting boards can be mounted against the wall and not to the floor, allowing the floor under the skirting board to move back and forth, i.e. to ‘work’. Finally, the floor should be treated with a sealing layer, as untreated wood will absorb moisture from the air and release it back into the air.
The beams will dry out as a direct result of good floor insulation. It is often thought that warm air from the room penetrates through the porous wood of the floor into the cold, uninsulated supporting beams and then condenses there. But there is a permanent pressure differential between the crawl space and the house, causing an air flow from the crawl space (which, after floor insulation, can go via the skirting boards) into the house - and not the other way around. After insulation with TONZON this air is warmer, in winter, because the cold air absorbs the summer heat, so this is actually an energy-saving way to ventilate.

Thermos Cushions fill the space between the beams. This applies to all types of Thermos Cushions. So you don't actually lose any space in your basement.
